Description Phthalates are a class of synthetic chemicals used to make plastics more flexible or are used as dissolving agents for materials. Consumer products release phthalates into our homes, schools, and workplaces as they degrade. The Phthalates Action Plan identifies, characterizes, and evaluates uses and releases of phthalates, and recommends actions to protect human health and the environment. Washington State’s departments of Ecology and Health work with industry, Tribes, local governments, and environmental groups to develop action plans.
