Description Recreational gymnastic facilities have many foam products like floor mats, landing pads, pit cubes, and other padded equipment that often contain flame retardants to slow the spread of fire. Flame retardant exposure is associated with harmful health effects like cancer and endocrine disruption. One method to address the exposure hazard to harmful flame retardants is to remove the source. Washington State Department of Ecology’s Product Replacement Flame Retardant Foam Disposal Program financially supports replacing foam pit cubes containing toxic flame retardants with alternative foam pit cubes that do not contain added flame retardants. To assess the effectiveness of this replacement program, Ecology will conduct a study at two participating gymnastic facilities to assess flame retardants in the foam pit cubes currently in use and the replacement alternative foam pit cubes.
