Description In 2022, Ecology sampled sediments in Commencement Bay as part of the Urban Bays surveys under the Puget Sound Sediment Monitoring Program. Sediment chemistry, physical properties, and the composition of benthic invertebrate communities were evaluated and compared to results from previous surveys conducted in 1999, 2008, and 2014.

Key findings:
• Sediments ranged in depth and were mostly sand or sand-silt mixes. Carbon and nitrogen patterns showed a clear influence from the Puyallup River and shoreline areas.
• Seven chemicals exceeded state sediment quality standards, suggesting possible harm to bottom-dwelling organisms. However, overall chemical exposure has decreased since 2014.
• Benthic (bottom-dwelling) communities showed signs of decline, with more areas showing an adversely affected condition than in previous years.
• Community patterns were linked to depth, grain size, nitrogen levels, and Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollution. Still, about half of the variation in benthic life couldn’t be explained by the factors we measured.
