Description The Washington Department of Ecology completed a periodic review for Crownhill Elementary School property (Site) at 1500 Rocky Point Road (northern parcel) and the northern portion of the Bremerton United Methodist Church property at 1150 Marine Drive (southern parcel).

The Site was used for sand and gravel mining up to the 1930s. After excavation stopped, the pit was used as a municipal/industrial landfill in the 1930s and 1940s. The depth of fill extended from 15 to 40 feet below grade. The landfill activities caused the Site to be contaminated with various hazardous substances. Bremerton School District acquired the northern Site parcel from Kitsap County in 1954, and the Methodist Church likely acquired the southern Site parcel in the 1960s.

Cleanup of this Site includes institutional controls to prevent exposures to remaining contamination. A periodic review was recently conducted to make sure the institutional controls remain effective, and the cleanup action still protects human health and the environment. The results of the review confirm that the cleanup completed is still protective. Ecology is inviting comments on the periodic review.
