Description | HFCs are greenhouse gases used in cooling, insulation, and aerosols. While they replaced ozone-depleting CFCs, they trap heat thousands of times more effectively than carbon dioxide, making them major climate pollutants. As cooling demand rises, HFC emissions grow rapidly. To reduce their impact, Washington adopted WAC 173-443 in November 2023, banning certain HFCs and requiring a transition to safer alternatives. The rule applies to anyone manufacturing, selling, or distributing HFC-containing products in the state. |
