Description In 2025, Washington State Department of Ecology conducted a study to assess levels of lead and cadmium present in inexpensive children’s jewelry marketed for children 12 years and younger. Under Washington State’s Children’s Safe Products Act, lead and cadmium in children’s products are restricted to 90 parts per million (ppm) for lead and 40 ppm for cadmium.

We purchased a total of 50 unique children’s jewelry products, and 60 component samples were sent to the lab for lead and cadmium analysis. Forty-four (73.3%) component samples from 39 products contained lead, cadmium, or both above the detection limit of 1.0 ppm. Six (10%) component samples from five products contained lead, cadmium, or both above the levels of concern outlined in the Children’s Safe Products Act.
