| Description | Black Lake Grocery is an active convenience store and gas station situated on the northwestern corner of Black Lake in Thurston County, Washington. Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination was first discovered in the soil and groundwater at the Black Lake Grocery site in 1989, originating from leaking underground storage tanks. In 1995, these tanks were removed, and the surrounding soil was excavated. A permeable reactive barrier consisting of a sphagnum moss-filled pit was installed along Black Lake’s shoreline in 2004. This treatment wall passively amends contaminated groundwater as it flows towards Black Lake. Analytical results from groundwater samples collected in 2023 indicate continued contamination of the near-surface aquifer in proximity to the Black Lake Grocery site. While contaminant concentrations have decreased since initial remedial activities took place in 1995, groundwater sample contaminant concentrations continue to exceed (not meet) established cleanup levels in 4 of the site’s wells. Sample concentrations downgradient of the treatment wall indicate a reduction in BTEX and TPH-G concentrations; these concentrations also suggest that petroleum contamination is migrating from the site into Black Lake. |
