| Description | In 2025, Washington State Department of Ecology conducted a study to assess lead and cadmium levels in inexpensive children’s jewelry sold by online retailers and marketed for children 12 years and younger. Under Washington State’s Children’s Safe Products Act, lead and cadmium in children’s products are restricted to 90 parts per million (ppm) for lead and 40 ppm for cadmium. At the federal level, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission also enforces restrictions on lead and cadmium content in children’s products. We purchased 40 children’s jewelry products available from online retailers in late 2025. A total of 60 component samples were analyzed for lead and cadmium. Thirty-three (55%) component samples from 22 products contained lead, cadmium, or both above the reporting limit of 1.0 ppm. Seven (12%) component samples from five products contained lead or cadmium above the levels of concern outlined in the Children’s Safe Products Act. |
