| Description | The Land Use Practices that Reduce Nitrate Loading to Groundwater study supports the Lower Yakima Valley Groundwater Management Area (GWMA) efforts. The goal of this study is to assess land use practices and identify those that are successful in reducing nitrate loading to groundwater. By determining which practices are effective, we can work with our partners and inform the community, so they can make positive changes that will ultimately improve groundwater quality in the Lower Yakima Valley. This project implements or partially implements, four of the recommended actions in the GWMA plan, which was developed and approved by a locally led committee. This project which is funded by the Washington State Legislature is a cooperative effort between Washington State University, Washington State Department of Agriculture, South Yakima Conservation District, and Washington State Department of Ecology. This assessment will generate data to determine the effectiveness of selected land use management practices using groundwater monitoring and deep soil sampling at multiple locations within the Lower Yakima Valley. The results and conclusions from this study may be applied to other areas in Washington State, where groundwater is impacted by elevated nitrate concentrations. |
