Description Ecology’s Toxic Studies Unit within the Environmental Assessment Program has been conducting targeted source investigations and monitoring for toxic contaminants in the Columbia River Basin since the 1980s. Many of these investigations have informed listings under section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act and have been part of Total Maximum Daily Load studies.

This monitoring project has two main goals: (1) sample and assess contaminant load and concentrations in a network of monitoring stations in major tributaries as they enter the mainstem Columbia River, and (2) establish and evaluate a baseline dataset for resident fish otolith microchemistry and fish life history. The geographic focus of this project will be the main tributary confluence areas with the Mid- and Upper Columbia River.

Monitoring will focus on three chemical groups in multiple media: PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), and DDx (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and metabolites). We will also supplement the analysis of concurrently collected fish tissues for PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). While the proposed monitoring focuses on a select list of toxics, the approaches developed will be broadly applicable.
