Description Artificial turf and artificial ground cover products have been installed in many communities for use as athletic playfields, playgrounds, park ground cover, and for landscape mulching. Artificial ground covers can include rubber surfacing used as playground flooring and running tracks, as well as rubber mulches used in a variety of applications. The materials used in artificial turf and ground cover installations have changed over time, and vary across installations, complicating the task of assessing potential environmental impact. This study will measure specific toxic chemicals in artificial components from ground cover installations across Washington State. Samples will consist of artificial turf and ground cover components made of different materials, including turf blades, rubber mats, mulches, crumb rubber, and alternative infill types, running tracks, and playground flooring.
