| Description | The Washington State Legislature directed Ecology to engage in a collaborative process on the development of geothermal energy resources. Senate Bill 6039 directs Ecology to identify opportunities and risks associated with the development of geothermal resources in three locations with the highest geothermal potential in Washington. The collaborative effort includes working closely with experts from the state departments of Commerce, Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP), Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), Natural Resources (DNR), and the Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council (EFSEC). This draft legislative update provides an overview of the collaborative process and engagement activities, information about potential geothermal technologies, and preliminary recommendations and themes identified. The update is due to the governor and Legislature by June 30, 2026. A final legislative report is due June 30, 2027. |
