| Description | 6PPD is a chemical added to tires to increase their lifespan. 6PPD moves through the tire’s body and turns into 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ) when it reacts with the ozone in the atmosphere. Fatally toxic to keystone salmonoids, both 6PPD and 6PPDQ enter the environment when tires wear on roads. These chemicals may also enter the environment through tire recycling and recycled tire derived products, though more research is needed to understand this mechanism of emission. Understanding the pathways of 6PPD and 6PPDQ pollution from tires will help us strategize how to mitigate their negative impacts on the environment, culture, and economy. The 2023-25 Supplemental Operating Budget (Senate Bill 5950, Section 302) directed Ecology to produce a report analyzing the contribution of waste tires to 6PPD-q pollution. Waste tires, as defined by RCW 70A.205.440(3), means tires that are no longer suitable for their original purpose because of wear, damage, or defect. This report was prepared to meet the requirements of the budget proviso. |
