Description A study if freshwater fish hatcheries was conducted by the Washington State Department of Ecology during the 1988 summer low flow period. Hatchery effluents showed significant increases in temperature, pH, suspended solids (total and volatile), ammonia, organic nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand. Wastewater discharge sometimes caused violation of state water quality standards; impacts were exacerbated by poor dilution. Hatchery nutrient loads equaled or exceeded receiving water loads; effects of enrichment were most evident in oligotrophic waters. Benthic macroinvertebrates sensitive to organic waste were often replaced by more tolerant forms in the vicinity of hatchery outfalls.
