Description In 1996, the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) entered into a partnership to conduct a joint sediment study in Puget Sound. The goals include determination and evaluation of the spatial extent of anthropogenic contamination and toxicity in sediments, and assessment of sediment toxicity and its effect on benthic macroinvertebrate communities through use of the Sediment Quality Triad approach. Sampling was conducted in 1997 in north sound, 1998 in central sound, and 1999 in south sound and Hood Canal. This Quality Assurance Project and Implementation Plan documents the sampling design, field and laboratory methods, quality control procedures, and data validation and assessment for this joint Ecology-NOAA Puget Sound sediment monitoring project.
