Description A major source of water pollution all across Washington State is malfunctioning on-site septic tank systems. Approximately 25 percent of Washington’s population is currently served by about 645,000 on-site septic systems. It is estimated that up to 15 percent of those systems are inadequately treating sewage that is being discharged to surface and ground waters in our watersheds.
