Description Sediments collected from ten lakes and wetlands in the Upper Columbia River valley in 2012 were analyzed for lead, zinc, arsenic, cadmium, copper, antimony, mercury, total organic carbon, and grain size. The study builds upon findings from a broader investigation conducted in 2010 that reported elevated metals concentrations in lake sediments from this part of the Upper Columbia. Historical transboundary air pollution from the Trail smelter in British Columbia is identified as the probable source of contamination. Spatial and temporal patterns in metals concentrations are described and the potential for adverse biological effects assessed. The chronology of metals deposition is illustrated with an age-dated sediment core collected from Cedar Lake near the international border.
