Description | This study summarizes results from the sixth year of sampling lead in suspended particulate matter (SPM), as part of the PBT trend monitoring program. The Department of Ecology analyzed a total of 58 SPM samples from 15 monitoring sites across Washington in 2013. Lead concentrations ranged from below detection limits to 2,150 mg/kg, with a median of 51.2 mg/kg. The highest levels were detected at the Spokane River sites. Lead concentrations also were elevated at three urban streams and at the Upper Columbia River site. Recommendations include increasing sampling frequency, adding more small streams to the monitoring site list, discontinuing sampling of the mid-sized rivers, and researching time-integrated sampling methods. |
