Description | Previous surveys of Lake Washington have shown high levels of a class of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals known as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). In particular, urban lake-dwelling fish have been found to have high concentrations of PFAS in their tissues. The goal of this project is to characterize, identify, and prioritize the major pathways and sources of PFAS to Lake Washington. The purpose is to gain better understanding of the major pathways by which PFAS enters the lake, and the potential sources contributing to the high concentrations in fish. This Quality Assurance Project Plan describes our study design. We will collect and analyze PFAS in water samples from the lake, tributaries to the lake, stormwater outfalls, drainage from highway bridges, and bulk atmospheric deposition. We will also collect and analyze PFAS in sediment samples from the lake, and in sediment and biofilm samples from the tributaries. Sampling will occur during one base flow event in 2020, one event during winter/spring high flows, and five storm events during fall 2020–spring 2021. |
