Description The Department of Ecology used field results from a 5-year nitrogen (N) budget study at a manured grass field in northwest Washington to test a mass balance mixing box spreadsheet model that quantitatively predicts the impact of excess N on underlying shallow groundwater nitrate concentrations.

Despite copious data for N mass balance components, soil conditions, and hydrogeologic conditions, the mass balance-predicted groundwater nitrate-N concentration was only 30% of the average field-measured early winter groundwater concentration. On the other hand, the nitrate concentration predicted, based on post-harvest soil nitrate, was 221% of that measured in the field and also a poor predictor of early winter shallow groundwater nitrate. Neither surrogate provided reliable predictions of the groundwater quality response to land application of nutrients at this site.
