| Description | During 2009-2016, groundwater sampling was conducted in the spring of each year at 16-25 private water supply wells in the Sumas-Blaine aquifer in Whatcom County. In 9 of 25 wells, statistically significant decreasing trends for nitrate were detected from 2003 to 2016. No significant trend was observed for nitrate in 15 wells, and one well had an upward trend. The percent of samples that exceeded 10 mg L-1 nitrate-N in all wells decreased from 45-59% in 2003-2005 to 15-32% in 2013-2016. Limitations of the study include the small number of wells relative to the size of the aquifer, representativeness of samples from private water supply wells, unreliable access to wells, and potential long-term climate influences. |
