Description In 2021, the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) carried out a study to evaluate concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from three municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) that receive influent likely to contain PFAS. In February 2021, Ecology collected samples of influent, effluent, sludge, and biosolids for analysis of 40 PFAS.

The goals of this study were to (1) conduct an initial reconnaissance of PFAS concentrations along several points in a wastewater system in Washington state, (2) better understand how PFAS moves through WWTPs with varying treatment types, and (3) evaluate PFAS speciation in a WWTP.
