Description Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) is a firefighting foam used to extinguish liquid-based fires—such as fires fueled by gasoline of oil. However, AFFF contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), toxic chemicals that do not easily break down and can negatively impact human health and the environment.

This fact sheet summarizes the alternatives for safer disposal of AFFF stockpiled at the state’s municipal fire departments. We encourage you to provide input during the public comment period, open December 20, 2023, through February 5, 2024.
