Author(s) Sandra Weakland
Description Ecology samples surface sediments across Puget Sound each April to assess habitat conditions, chemical contamination, and benthic invertebrate communities. Data from 50 monitoring stations reveal consistent patterns shaped by depth, grain size, and nutrient levels. While most chemical concentrations were low, a few exceeded state sediment quality standards. Benthic communities remained relatively stable over time, with the poorest conditions found in shallow, poorly circulated inlets. The findings highlight key environmental drivers and the need for monitoring to better understand Puget Sound’s dynamic ecosystem.
