Description In 2021, Washington’s PFAS Chemical Action Plan (CAP) identified protective clothing, footwear, and outdoor gear as sources of PFAS due to their water, oil, and stain-repellent coatings. A 2022 legislative amendment allowed Ecology to prioritize these products as outlined in the CAP without additional steps and required regulatory determinations by June 2024. As part of this process, the Safer Products for Washington program prioritized apparel, footwear, and gear in cycle 1.5 and ordered manufacturers to report on the chemicals used for stain and water resistance in products sold in the state. This document provides information about the information Ecology requested and received from manufacturers of apparel, footwear, and gear that use PFAS for stain resistance, water repellency, and waterproofing.
