The Sterling Mine site is located about 1 mile south of Metaline and is situated east of Highway 31, on the bank of the Pend Oreille River. The Sterling Mine is an inactive zinc, lead, and silver mine. The last known date of operation was 1926. The site included several shallow mineral exploration excavations and associated waste rock piles.

What Has Been Done

An initial site investigation was conducted at the site in 2007 that included the collection of soil samples from waste rock piles. Analytical results from the initial investigation indicate that elevated concentrations of metals including arsenic, cadmium, and lead are present in soil at the site.

Cleanup

A portion of the site was developed with the construction of a single family residence. Construction included regrading and capping mine waste rock beneath the footprint of the building.
