Site Description
The Deer Trail Mine is 6 miles east of Fruitland. Mining was done at the site from as early as 1884 to 1984. The site consists of a series of horizontal passages leading into the mine and the remains of a former ore-concentrating mill.
What's Been Done
Ecology investigated water and sediment quality at the site in 2002. Results of the investigation showed sediments downstream of the mine contain elevated concentrations of arsenic, lead, and zinc. In 2004, Ecology completed a Preliminary Assessment summarizing environmental concerns at the site.
Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) completed a site characterization report in 2006 as part of DNR's effort to build a database of major mines in the state.

What Happens Next?
Ecology and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plan to continue investigating the site to further define the extent of contamination.
