Lovitt Tailings with mine in background
Lovitt Tailings with mine in background
The Lovitt Mine Site is located south of Wenatchee, Washington on the west side of the Squilchuck Creek drainage. The Lovitt Mine was developed as a gold and silver mine in the late 1800s. Until about 1961, ore from the mine was shipped directly to the smelter in Tacoma. In 1961, a mill was constructed to concentrate the ore. Tailings from the mill, or the material remaining after milling processes removed the desired metals, where deposited in an impoundment area adjacent to Squilchuck Creek.

The mine ceased production and the mill has since been removed. An estimated 400,000 to 450,000 cubic yards of tailings are deposited at the site. The tailings are in an impoundment area that covers over 13 acres.

Limited mineral exploration activities continue in the historic underground mine. Active portions of the mine include several mine openings, explorations, and associated mine waste-rock piles.
