Site Description
The Yakima Old City Landfill site was a dump and burn landfill which closed sometime in the late 1960s. It is approximately 28 acres in size, with a maximum fill depth of 40 feet. The site is currently a developed park.
In 1986, a site inspection report was published by the Department of Ecology. This report states that in 1982 the Yakima River was sampled upstream and downstream of the site with an additional water sample from the pond immediately south of the site. These samples were analyzed for EPA priority pollutants, including pesticides. No contamination was found in any of the samples.
In May 1997, Yakima Health District (YHD) personnel sampled the downgradient groundwater and had it analyzed for aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium, calcium, chloride, chromium, cobalt, copper, fluoride, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, mercury, nickel, nitrate (as N), potassium, selenium, silver, sodium, sulfate, TPH, thallium, total dissolved solids, total organic carbon, vanadium, zinc and 36 volatile organics. Only lead was found above state cleanup levels.
Further investigation showed that the lead detected was likely naturally occurring. Lead detection is now below state cleanup standards.
