Site Description
The Benedict Property site is located at 19223 Denmark Street SW in Rochester. The site is a private residence.
In 2004, a heating oil storage tank located at the residence developed corrosion holes and released about 300 gallons of heating oil onto surrounding soil. Site investigations revealed some soil and groundwater contamination from petroleum hydrocarbons.
The site was place on the Hazardous Sites list with a rank of 5. The Hazardous Sites List includes sites that have been assessed for their potential risk to human health and the environment. Sites are ranked 1-5, based on the degree of risk, with 1 being the highest.
The site was cleaned up under the voluntary cleanup program. About 10 cubic yards of contaminated soil were removed. The property owners also installed a system that pulls contaminant vapors out of the soil (soil vapor extraction). The system operated from 2005 through 2008. Groundwater and soil from the tank area and around the site were tested for contamination from 2005 to 2011. No contaminants were above state cleanup levels in recent groundwater or soil samples.

Current Status
Ecology reviewed the site cleanup activity and determined that:
- The site is no longer a threat to human health or the environment.
- The cleanup actions at the site meet MTCA cleanup standards.
- No further action is needed.
Ecology held a public comment period on removing the site from the Hazardous Sites List from July 5 - August 5, 2011. No comments on the removal were received.

Voluntary Cleanup Program
This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.
Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
