Ecology held a comment period from August 30- September 30, 2019 to delist the Site from the Hazardous Sites List. This Site is now delisted from the Hazardous Sites List.

Site Background

The Sudden Valley Resort cleanup Site (Site) is located at 2650 Lake Louise Road, Bellingham, WA 98229. The property is part of the Sudden Valley residential and recreational community that was developed during the 1970s.

The Site is located on a property known as Area Z. Area Z is used for material storage, equipment maintenance, and an underground sewer lift station. The property is zoned Rural 5-Acres (R5A) and is near Beaver Creek.

A portion of the Site was used as a sewage lift station for the Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District. During the expansion of the sewer lift station in 1999, petroleum contamination was discovered. The contamination was from leaking underground fuel storage tanks. Ecology conducted an initial investigation and concluded that gasoline and diesel contamination were present in soil and ground water.

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
