Study NameYakima River Pesticides and PCBs TMDL: Evaluation of Water Quality Study Findings
EIM Data Entry Review StatusReviewed
Study TypeTotal Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) effectiveness monitoring
Study PurposeDepartment of Ecology conducted a water quality study in 2007-2008 to aid in developing a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for six legacy pesticides or breakdown products (DDT, DDE, DDD, dieldrin, chlordane, and alpha-BHC), the current-use insecticides endosulfan and chlorpyrifos, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Over 400 samples were analyzed of surface water, treatment plant effluents, fruit packer & vegetable processor effluents, and urban stormwater runoff. The report describes how the study was conducted and analyzes the data in terms of compliance with water quality criteria, temporal and seasonal patterns, trends, pollutant loading, and the relative importance of sources. Numeric water quality targets are described for the chemicals of concern, and the river's loading capacity is calculated
