Study Purpose | Yakima Training Center (YTC) is a sub-installation of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, owned and operated by the U.S. Army (Army) north-northeast of Yakima. In 2019, potential sources areas for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) contamination at YTC were identified. In 2021, Army began sampling domestic wells to the west of YTC in the East Selah area. More than 100 of those samples exceeded at least one of Ecology’s Preliminary Cleanup Levels established for PFAS compounds in groundwater under the Model Toxics Control Act.
Surface water in the area, including the Yakima River, Elton Pond, and irrigation canals, has not been sampled for PFAS contamination. Contaminant transport occurs faster in surface water than in groundwater. Determining whether contamination is reaching surface water will lead to a better understanding of the potential extent of impacts. |
