INDEPENDENT CLEANUP COMPLETE

Big Wallys is a gas station, market, and restaurant. In 2010, a paving job near an above-ground storage tank system punctured the premium gasoline line, resulting in soil contamination.

No further cleanup is required after 40 cubic yards of contaminated soil were excavated and bioremediated. A protective cap prevents human contact with contaminated soil that remained because excavating it would have risked damage to existing structures, and an environmental covenant limits property uses that would potentially expose contamination.

Ecology issued a no further action letter under the Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP), stating that cleanup is complete, in July 2013. The VCP allows property owners to independently clean up a site and receive fee-based opinions about whether the cleanup meets state standards from Ecology.

Periodic reviews

Ecology completes a periodic review at least every 5 years after beginning cleanup at a site, as required by the Model Toxics Control Act. The purpose of the review is to evaluate site conditions after initial cleanup is complete to ensure people and the environment are protected.

We completed the first periodic review for Big Wallys August 21, 2019, and found that the cleanup actions remain effective.
