Cleanup Complete
Ecology removed the Northwest Pipeline Mead Meter Station from the Hazardous Sites List in 2013. The site is a natural gas meter station where gas is regulated and metered for distribution of natural gas to a local distribution company or customer.
An assessment of the site was done in 1990. Five drums of gravel and soil were removed from under and around the former meter stand to address inorganic mercury contamination. The main source of the contamination was likely from accidental spills during maintenance and calibration of equipment used at the meter station. Another source may have been from thermowells used to measure gas temperatures.
In 2008, more assessments were done to find out if mercury and arsenic were in soil. The level of mercury and arsenic in soil required cleanup. Additional soil was removed from the site in 2011, and follow-up sampling showed cleanup was complete.
