Site Description

Grandview Market Petrosun 1070 Site
Grandview Market Petrosun 1070 Site
The site began operating in 1965 and is currently a fueling station and convenience store.

In May 1991, according to the Corrective Action Report, the Grandview Fire Department alerted the owner about gas vapors in a building adjacent to the property as a result of a gasoline leak. A soil vapor survey was conducted and revealed elevated concentrations of petroleum (gasoline and diesel) in the vicinity of the former underground storage tanks (USTs), existing USTs and area north of the convenience store.

In September 1998, during an UST system upgrade, environmental sampling was conducted. Both soil and groundwater were contaminated by the gasoline leak.

In 1993, the site was added to Ecology’s Hazardous Sites List with a ranking of “2”. Sites on the Hazardous Sites List are a priority for Ecology and have completed a Site Hazard Assessment (SHA). An SHA provides information about the environmental risk of the site. Risk is based on the amount of contaminants, how toxic they are, and how easily they can come in contact with people and the environment. Sites are ranked relative to each other on a scale of “1” to “5”; with a rank of “5” being the lowest.

Cleanup Activities

In February 2000, a survey was done to determine the extent of the contamination and a report was completed, detailing the results in April of 2000. The report prepared, a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS), described the areas of soil and groundwater impacted.

Soil and groundwater were monitored from 2000 and continued until 2007. A remediation system operated from 2002 until 2006. The system consisted of groundwater pumping and treatment called air sparging and soil vapor extraction. Air sparging pumps air underground to separate the vapors from groundwater and soil. Soil vapor extraction is a vacuum that pulls the air and vapors for treatment. Treatment usually consists of either heat treatment or a biofiltration that breaks down the vapors.

Quarterly groundwater monitoring resumed in January 2016 and continued for eight consecutive quarters until November 2017. Soil sampling completed in December 2016 reported concentrations below state cleanup levels.

Cleanup Complete

Ecology has determined the site is no longer a threat to human health and the environment. Ecology issued a no further action letter for the site in October 2018. The site has been removed from the Hazardous Sites List.

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
