Description When aquatic environments are damaged, the health and viability of organisms decrease. We can detect, explain, and address changes in the chemical environment. However, it can be difficult to explain changes detected in biological communities, preventing restoration of healthy ecosystems.

This document provides a formal process for identifying the causes of biological impairment in aquatic systems. Though no regulatory component is involved in this process, conclusions drawn from a Stressor Identification assessment can help prioritize the Total Maximum Daily Load or Water Quality Improvement Plan processes.

The Department of Ecology intends this guidance document to assist anyone involved in managing Washington’s aquatic resources.
