Author(s) Sackmann, B.S.
Description In 2009-2010, Ecology deployed a Submersible Ultraviolet Nitrate Analyzer (SUNA) in the Deschutes River at the E. Street Bridge in Tumwater. The Deschutes River is high in nitrate and discharges to south Puget Sound which is sensitive to eutrophication.

The SUNA provided nitrate estimates within 0.05 mg/L of laboratory values and helped:
*Quantify uncertainties associated with nitrate loading estimates derived using more coarsely sampled time series.
*Evaluate the cost-benefit of different sampling strategies.

Monthly sampling provided nitrate load estimates that were within 10% of the true value, whereas a 10-day sampling strategy reduced the uncertainty to 5%.
