Description | Pharmaceuticals, personal care products, hormones, and sterols were analyzed in reclaimed water and groundwater samples collected at the LOTT Martin Way (Lacey), Quincy, and Yelm reclaimed water facilities. Using reclaimed water to recharge groundwater is a main component of these facilities. A total of 73 of the 145 compounds analyzed were detected in reclaimed water. The most frequently observed were drugs (or their metabolites) used to treat high blood pressure, followed by antidepressants and antibiotics. Only 15 compounds were found in groundwater samples. Carbamazepine (anti-epileptic), meprobamate (tranquilizer), and sulfamethoxazole (antibiotic) appear to be good tracers of reclaimed water. The majority of compounds (80%) identified in reclaimed water do not appear to persist in groundwater at readily detectable levels. |
