Description The Department of Ecology (Ecology), with assistance from the City of Tacoma, conducted prototype testing and a comparative analysis of three stormwater in-line sediment samplers in Tacoma and Spokane, WA. The samplers included a new Ecology prototype device (Hamlin), Tacoma’s device (Fuller), and a commonly used bottle trap device.

Representativeness of each sampler’s captured material was compared against a sample taken from the stormwater column in the same pipe using a mobile continuous-flow centrifuge and particle size analyzer. Samples were analyzed for total organic carbon, percent solids, grain size metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls.

Advantages and disadvantages were identified, and no single device was superior in all categories. However, with minor design modifications, the Hamlin sampler would be best suited for stormwater sediment contaminant monitoring.
