Description The Department of Ecology analyzed lead in suspended particulate matter (SPM) from 15 sites throughout Washington State for the fifth year of a long-term monitoring effort.

A total of 60 samples were collected in the spring and fall of 2012. Lead concentrations ranged from below detection limits to 2,652 mg/kg, with a median of 53 mg/kg. The Spokane River at the Idaho border had the highest lead concentrations, followed by the Spokane River Nine Mile site. Lead levels were also elevated at three urban streams and the Upper Columbia River.
