Description In 2011 and 2013, the Washington State Department of Health downgraded classifications of shellfish growing areas along the North Pacific Coast due to fecal coliform bacteria (FC) pollution. Concern over the lack of identification of sources prompted the Washington State Department of Ecology to conduct a FC source identification study at 32 locations along the North Pacific Coast.

No specific sources of bacteria were found. Highest FC levels in freshwater were found in the dry season. In marine water, highest FC levels occurred during the wet season. Twelve locations exceeded (did not meet) Washington State water quality criteria for FC and are recommended for listing as impaired water bodies.
