Description Sediment-dwelling invertebrates play an important role in marine food webs and the transfer of energy to higher trophic levels, including various salmon species. In 2016, the Puget Sound Ecosystem Monitoring Program (PSEMP) sediment component, conducted by the Department of Ecology added a size classification and biomass component to their existing suite of benthic community indices. Size categorizations and biomass provide information on size structure and life stage distribution within benthic communities, which can influence productivity and what quantity of food is available for higher trophic levels.

This poster describes biomass and size classification methods used for the PSEMP Long-Term Sediment Monitoring program, including establishment of a size class reference collection used in current and future biomass estimates.

The poster was presented at the Salmon Recovery Conference, April 25-27, 2017, in Wenatchee, Washington.
