Description Cranberry, Johns, and Mill Creeks are located near the city of Shelton in Mason County, Washington. These creeks remain on Washington State’s 2016 303(d) list of waterbodies for not meeting temperature water quality standards. Data suggests that the elevated stream temperatures may be attributed to the current condition of headwater wetlands or lakes with large water surface areas exposed to sunlight. Increased stream temperature resulting from anthropogenic activities can be slowed and prevented by reversing the process over time. The reversal can be accomplished by increasing riparian shade through improved riparian vegetation, preventing or minimizing impacts of land-use activities on stream hydrology/morphology and by using selective withdrawal of lake water at depth using an outlet structure. Generally, the water cools as it flows downstream. Groundwater contribution may be a factor that explains the downstream cooling in these waterbodies. Protection of thermal refugia, provided with the groundwater inputs, is a key strategy to protect aquatic life and survival strategies.
