Description This 2-page fact sheet describes a new expedited process for people who want to clean up their contaminated sites through the Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) under the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology). In April 2019, Washington’s Legislature passed a bill authorizing the new process for cleanups that qualify. The new process will:

1)Provide a dedicated VCP cleanup project manager to help customers meet the requirements of Washington’s environmental cleanup law, the Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA).
2)Provide prompt written opinions on whether the proposed or completed cleanups meet MTCA requirements, or if further steps are necessary.
3)Continue encouraging the use of model remedies where appropriate.

The Expedited VCP process is self-sustaining. Customers must pay all of Ecology’s costs, including a nonrefundable application fee. Ecology may waive some costs for cleanups that provide affordable housing.
