Description Cosmetics are a type of consumer product used to cleanse or alter one’s appearance. These products can contain chemicals that are hazardous to people or the environment. Women of color, especially Black women and women with dark skin, may be exposed these hazardous chemicals more frequently.
The Department of Ecology collaborated with the Department of Health to identify what products are used by Washington residents of color. Ecology purchased similar products and tested them for the presence of heavy metals, formaldehyde, ortho-phthalates, and asbestos.
This report includes a list of the products Ecology bought for testing, Ecology’s product test results for heavy metals and formaldehyde, and a summary of other chemicals found in cosmetics according to manufacturer reports and other product testing studies. Ecology found hazardous substances in products Washington residents reported frequently using and products intended for children.
