Description Groundwater in the East Selah area in central Washington is contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This contamination is the result of historical use of aqueous film-forming foam in firefighting training activities at the Yakima Training Center. Potential PFAS sources were identified on base in 2019. In 2021, the Army sampled privately owned domestic wells and found PFAS-contaminated groundwater off-base.

In 2024, the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) conducted a study to determine whether PFAS-contaminated groundwater is discharging into nearby surface water. In April and September 2024, Ecology targeted surface water, including the Yakima River, two ponds, a wetland, and two irrigation canals, as well as shallow groundwater discharging into the Yakima River. Additionally, in September 2024, Ecology sampled a pipe discharging treated wastewater from the Yakima Training Center into the Yakima River.

PFAS were detected in all the shallow groundwater samples collected along the banks of the Yakima River, as well as co-located surface water samples. The highest PFAS concentrations were found in surface water near the pipe discharging into the Yakima River. PFAS analytes were detected in all the pond surface water samples. A small stream draining a wetland also had detectable PFAS. Two irrigation canals that transit the Yakima Training Center were sampled immediately downstream from the Army installation. One PFAS analyte was tentatively detected in the September 2024 sample from one of the canals. PFAS analytes were not detected in any other samples from the canals.
