| Description | From 1984 to 2018, the Washington Department of Ecology’s Environmental Assessment Program monitored toxic contaminants in fish in the Palouse River. Results showed concentrations indicative of water quality impairment. Although banned in the 1970s, some legacy contaminants persist in the watershed and bioaccumulate in fish and other organisms. Ecology implemented a total maximum daily load (TMDL) in 2007 to reduce polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides in the Palouse River. Load allocations were suggested for the wastewater treatment plants. Other strategies included managing stormwater, reducing erosion from agricultural lands, and natural attenuation. This report summarizes data collected in 2018. Ecology collected fish samples to determine if contaminants in fish are decreasing. PCBs, dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT), and dieldrin were contaminants of interest because they exceeded human health standards. Our findings show some attenuation of PCBs in fish tissue, DDT levels remain unchanged, and dieldrin appears to be increasing in fish from the Palouse River. |
