Description The Department of Ecology (Ecology) completed a third periodic review for the Weyerhaeuser West Cleanup Site (site) at 101 E Marine View Dr. The site is located next to the Snohomish River in Everett. Nearby historical land uses include a lead smelter and arsenic plant operated from the late 1800s to early 1900s, and a residential area located just south of the site.
Weyerhaeuser began operations in Everett in 1902, and the site includes former lumber and pulp mills. The site was split into areas for uses such as pulp processing, fuel storage, sandblasting, and chip storage. A large fire occurred in 2016 that burned down a few of the areas at the site.
Cleanup of this site includes an Environmental Covenant intended to prevent exposures to remaining contamination. The periodic review found that the existing remedy may not fully protect human health and the environment due to incomplete land use restrictions, inaccurate documentation of contaminated soil areas, and potential risks from uncapped contaminated soils.
