Description In 2019, Washington State adopted Escherichia coli (E. coli) as the new water quality standard for bacteria, replacing fecal coliform in accordance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines (WAC 173-201A). This change required WA State Department of Ecology to resurvey the White Salmon River Watershed, a system with known stream segments that have historically exceeded bacteria standards. To establish a new bacteria baseline, water samples were collected every two weeks at ten primary sites from 2022 to 2024, and at eight additional source tracking sites in 2024. Streamflow was also measured biweekly at seven primary locations from 2023 to 2024. This monitoring study successfully achieved its objectives by collecting high-quality bacteria (92% completeness) and streamflow (75% completeness) data and by conducting source tracking efforts.
